Software consulting with James Sperring

Software consulting for the decisions you’re stuck on.

You’ve got developers or a software partner, and something needs a closer look. Perhaps they’re suggesting a rewrite. Perhaps the work keeps slipping, and you’re struggling to get a straight answer about why. I can help you work through it with them.

I’m based in Gosport, near Portsmouth in Hampshire. I work remotely across the UK, with face-to-face time where the project calls for it.

Things we could look at

What are you trying to get to the bottom of?

“We need to rewrite it.”

There may be good reasons. I’d want to understand what’s hard to change today, what the replacement would improve and how you’d get from one to the other. Sometimes there’s a smaller change worth trying first.

Thinking through a rewrite

Everyone’s busy. Releases are still slow.

I’d follow a piece of work with the team. Where does it wait? What has to be done twice? What happens after the code is written? That gives us something useful to work on together.

Looking at slow delivery

You’ve got a proposal and a lot of questions.

A developer or agency has suggested an approach. You want to understand what’s included, what they’re assuming and what it means for the business. We can talk it through with them before you commit.

Why software estimates need context

Some of my background

I’ve worked on the software as well as the decisions.

That helps when we’re talking about what a change would actually involve.

Nicer Group

Guided the EJS to Next.js migration, supported container-based architecture and helped the team build the capability to own the platform.

Experience from fractional CTO and advisory work. Outcomes reflect combined platform, delivery and team improvements.

Auto Integrate

Shaped and delivered the integration, connecting the technical approach with partner needs and the business’s priorities.

Experience from hands-on integration delivery. Commercial outcomes involved several contributors across the business and its partners.

How would we work together?

We can start with one question, or work together regularly.

And the hands-on work?

Sometimes it helps to get into the code to answer a question or unblock someone. We can agree a small piece of that within the time set aside for ongoing support. Your team or software partner keeps responsibility for day-to-day delivery. We’ll agree the scope and fee before starting.
